What is Carbon Felt & Graphite Felt

Soft Carbon Felt & Graphite Felt for High-Temperature Insulation and Redox Flow Batteries
Carbon felt and graphite felt are soft, flexible insulation materials engineered for high-temperature applications in vacuum and inert atmosphere furnaces. Needle-punched from carbon fibers and processed via high-temperature treatment, they feature a uniform structure, exceptional thermal stability, and ultra-low thermal conductivity.

Beyond insulation, graphite felt is widely used as a high-performance electrode material for redox flow batteries in energy storage, thanks to its superior electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and excellent chemical stability.

We specialize in manufacturing two core material types: PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based graphite felt (cost-effective for most industrial insulation) and Rayon (viscose)-based graphite felt (superior insulation and low ash content for high-purity applications), fully tailored to your unique requirements.

How Are Our Carbon & Graphite Felts Manufactured

Our soft graphite felt is manufactured in-house with strict quality control: 1) Needle-punching of high-quality PAN/Rayon raw fibers for uniform structure; 2) Pre-oxidation stabilization at 200~400℃; 3) High-temperature carbonization at 1000℃ (fixed carbon content >95%); 4) Ultra-high temperature graphitization at 2300℃ under vacuum (100% outgassing, fixed carbon content >99.9%); 5) Special temperature and activation treatment or redox flow battery electrodes (optional); 6) Custom cutting/sizing/packing treatment.

Raw Fiber Weaving

High-quality PAN or Rayon fibers are needle-punched and woven into uniform, structurally stable fiber felt base material.

Pre-oxidation Stabilization

Stabilized at 200~400℃ in a controlled atmosphere to form a heat-resistant fiber structure for subsequent high-temperature processing.

High-Temperature Carbonization

Carbonized at 1000℃ in an inert atmosphere to remove non-carbon elements, forming high-purity carbon felt with over 95% fixed carbon content.

Ultra-High Temperature Graphitization

Graphitized at 2300℃ under vacuum to optimize the graphite crystal structure, delivering exceptional thermal stability and high temperature resistance.

Activated Process

Optional treatment of special temperature and activation process for redox flow battery electrodes to enhance electrochemical performance.

Precision Custom Finishing

Custom cutting, sizing, and packing tailored to your exact specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Soft Graphite Felt

1. What is the difference between carbon felt and graphite felt?

The core difference lies in processing temperature and carbon content. Carbon felt is processed at 1000℃ with a carbon content over 95%, while graphite felt undergoes 2300℃ graphitization, with a carbon content over 99%, better high temperature resistance, and higher electrical conductivity.

Our soft graphite felt can withstand continuous working temperatures up to 2200℃ in a vacuum or inert atmosphere, with a short-term maximum temperature of up to 3000℃.

Yes, we offer custom cutting, sizing, and specialized activation treatment for graphite felt electrodes used in redox flow batteries, to meet your specific electrochemical performance requirements.

PAN-based graphite felt offers higher tensile strength and cost-effectiveness, ideal for most vacuum furnace insulation applications. Rayon-based graphite felt has better thermal insulation performance and lower ash content, suitable for high-purity applications like semiconductor crystal growth furnaces.

Soft Graphite Felt can be cut with sharp carbon steel blades (avoid contamination) and installed with high-temperature resistant graphite fasteners in vacuum/inert atmosphere furnaces. We provide detailed installation guidelines for custom applications.
